Second time's a charm - Crispy calamari ($7.95), which approach the crispest, come in a petite paper bag with a dipping sauce of real Italian marinara. Arancini ($10.95) likewise have the crispest crust yet on these rice balls (two, the size of tennis balls). These are heavily flavored with saffron; they are also somewhat flavored with lobster and peas at the center, but taste mostly of creamy carnaroli, my favorite of the imported short-grain rices for risotto.

Italian Habit - Despite all the talk of American comfort food, it's not really mac and cheese most of us yearn for when spirits are as gray as piles of leftover snow. Italian is what we crave, and after a few years of flirting with French cuisine, the pendulum seems to be swinging back.

If Newbury Street is all about the show, though, Piattini holds a special niche. One Saturday evening, we settle in at a table next to a family group. The teen boy next to me starts explaining the appetizers, and his father chimes in with his favorites. Two of the members of the foursome next to us are explaining to a young woman why they always return here... Owner Oliviero says Piattini is a neighborhood restaurant.

The scenesters have spoken: Square meals are for squares. These days, their dining habits are making staid old Boston look like Barcelona: rather than sitting down to a soporific meat-and-potatoes, the beautiful people are lounge-hopping, grazing tapas-style as they go. Thank you so much for arranging such a fabulous menu for our party. The evening was a complete success. Your staff was so gracious, the hors d'oeuvres were delicious, and the piattinis were unbelievable. I don't think I have ever enjoyed a meal more.
